Glacier Kings – Kraken Preview

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings hit the road tonight as they will travel to Lake Cowichan in one of three Halloween games on tap in the VIJHL. The Glacier Kings have been playing well lately winning 3 of their last 4 games and have points in 4 of their last 5. Their opponents on the other hand haven’t been having a lot of luck lately. After a promising start where they won 5 of their first 6 games, the Kraken have now lost 8 consecutive matches and have sunk to the basement in the North Division. They’ve been outscored 29-12 in those 8 games which averages out to only scoring 1.5 goals per game during that stretch. Comox currently sits tied for 4th place in the North Division with a 6-7-1-2 record. A win would move them ahead of Port Alberni into sole possession of 4th and also place them at .500 for the first time this season. Lake Cowichan sports a 5-9-0-0 line which is 5 points behind the Glacier Kings and the Bombers.

I’m not really expecting a high scoring game. Both teams play a pretty good defensive game and each also have trouble scoring. As an insight, there are a total of 20 players that have scored at least 7 goals already this season. None are from either of these teams. Another example is the Yeti are the second lowest scoring team in the league ahead of only Kerry Park. Lake Cowichan has the 3rd lowest goals per game. Another stat shows the Glacier Kings leading scorer (Zaya Morro) is tied for 22nd place in the VIJHL. The Kraken’s leading point-getter (Kadin Bilajbegovic) is tied for 43rd. In fact, the only meeting between these two foes so far ended up in a low scoring 3-1 affair in favor of Comox back on October 17th. We might expect the same tonight.

As for special teams, here’s where they stack up:

There’s no question that the Glacier Kings have been working on their offensive game in practice lately and have scored 8 goals in their last 2 matches so they could be turning a corner. It’s only the second time this season that they’ve scored at least 4 goals in back to back games. The most they’ve scored in a game is 5 and have done that twice (Sept. 20th @ Kerry Park & Sept. 27th @ Nanaimo). The question is, who will be able to step up tonight?

Someone who has been playing well offensively is Ethan Gobel. No, he is not the leading scorer on his club but he is the only player that averages over a point a game. He was held pointless against Saanich in his last contest but racked up 1G, 3A in his previous one against Westshore. Head coach/GM Curtis Toneff says he likes a lot of things about Gobel, “Honestly, he’s a hockey nerd through and through. He loves the game, he wants to get better every day and I think he does get better every day and I think it rubs off on his teammates. I think if he wants to, he could work in hockey when he done. He was hurt for a few games and was doing more analytics than I do. He’s kind of a fun guy to have around as coaches. I know Brad Smith is a very big fan. Just kind of a coaches dream, a center with size, plays in every situation. He’s our version of Anze Kopitar. Having guys like him give you a chance to win a lot of nights down the stretch for sure.” So far this season, Gobel has tallied 3G, 11A 14Pts in 11 games.

The Kraken are a dangerous team to play right now. They are definitely overdue for a victory plus 4 of their 5 wins have come at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena. It is a tough place to play as noted by their 4-4 record there. With that being said, it is a very winnable game for the GKings as long as they don’t make too many silly mistakes. Toneff says he know this game is key in the standings and his squad can’t take the Kraken for granted, “They’re all important, it’s going to be tight for awhile. It’s going to be a desperate team that we’re facing. You look at the shot clock when Lake Cowichan plays, they’re usually in charge of the shot clock. Watching them, they’re usually in charge 50% of the game. I know they have a hard hat and lunch box mentality by the looks of it so we have to be ready to go and not think that we’re going to be spotted a three goal lead like a week and a half ago.” After winning their first 4 games at home, the Kraken have lost their last 4 in front of their fans.

The other two games in the VIJHL also have North Division implications with Victoria @ Campbell River and Oceanside @ Peninsula. If all goes well in the 3 games, Comox Valley could see themselves just 2 points out of first place in the North. It looks like Anthony Ganoung will get the start in net. The Glacier Kings line up is now posted in the “Gameday Lineups” section of this blog. Hopefully we’ll be celebrating a Blue Jays World Series Championship by the time the puck drops. Big Win For The Glacier Kings

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings had another strong performance on Saturday night as they downed the Saanich Predators 4-2 in VIJHL action. The GKings have now won 3 of their last 4 games and have points in 4 of their last 5 contests. The home team improved to 6-7-2-1 and find themselves tied for 4th place in the North Division with the Port Alberni Bombers. The Predators loss drops their record to 4-11-0-0 and remain ranked 4th in the South.

Saanich got off to a quick start when Josh Yolkowski took a long stretch pass off the boards in behind the Glacier Kings defence and deked goaltender Anthony Ganoung just 1:23 into the game. It was 1-0 early.

Comox Valley would tie it up about 8 minutes later on the power play when Westin Churchill came flying down the left side and took a shot that was stopped by George Jantz but the huge rebound came into the slot and was one-timed by Landen May into the back of the net.

The opening period would finish tied up at a goal apiece despite the Yeti having a very strong last 15 minutes. They outshot the Preds 20-8.

The second period was more of the same with Comox having an edge in the play. George Jantz was outstanding in between the pipes in this period as well. The Glacier Kings did take their first lead of the game with Westin Churchill being involved again. He won an offensive zone faceoff right to Leon Mikhalchuk at the top of the circle. The big forward took a quick shot that was stopped by Jantz but Churchill followed up on the rebound and beat the 17 year old goaltender.

The lead would be stretched to 3-1 just 1:02 later when two Predator defencemen collided which caused a 2-man breakaway. Zaya Morro slid the puck over to Kingston Gowans who one-timed a shot to the glove side of Jantz and beat him cleanly.

That was it for the scoring in the second period although Comox had so many chances to build on that lead. Shots were 19-15 in favor of the home team.

Saanich played a very good third period. About midway through that final frame, Elijah Kim centered the puck to Kaydin Halladay. His shot went off Ganoung’s pad right to Josh Yolkowski who was standing at the side of the net and had an easy tap in. Suddenly it was 3-2.

That would be as close as they would get however. Despite some good pressure, Anthony Ganoung stood tall. Isaac Dunsire would ice the game late with a 160 foot shot into an empty net. Shots were 17 aside in the third.

All in all it was a fun game to watch. Both goaltenders played well and were deserving of getting a star. That’s the second meeting between these clubs with each side winning once. Comox Valley has one more game this month. It is on Halloween when they travel to Lake Cowichan. The Predators are done for October finishing the month at 1-7. Their next action is Sunday in Victoria.

Other Observations:

  • The rain storm caused the Predators to get to the rink late but they did have time to do the pre-game warm up. In fact they were the first team on the ice.
  • Glacier Kings hit a goal post and a crossbar in the first period.
  • Josh Yolkowski looks like a keeper. He’s played just 2 VIJHL games and has 3G, 1A. He’s so new that he doesn’t even have a name bar on his jersey yet.
  • I would have liked to see Anthony Ganoung get an assist on the last goal as he touched it right before Isaac Dunsire shot it into the empty net.
  • Comox Valley’s PK continues to be dominant They have now killed off 26 of 28 shorthanded situations in October and are the best in the league.
  • Kaydin Halladay extended his point streak to 6 games (3G, 7A). He has a point in every game but one this season.
  • A big thanks to Dave Dueck for playing a Jimmy Buffett song for me and a Taylor Swift song for my wife. You’re a “beauty” Dave.
  • It took 53 games but Elliot Lee scored his first VIJHL regular season goal.
  • The Yeti’s PP hasn’t been great this year but they have scored with the man advantage in 3 straight.
  • Leon Mikhalchuk had his goal streak snapped at 4 games but he did extend his points streak to 5.
  • PLEASE stop cutting out the national anthem during the broadcast to play hard rock music! It’s so DISRESPECTFUL! We see all the players standing on the blue line facing and respecting the flag and then we hear the broadcast cut out and “Airbourne” gets cranked up.
  • Comox Valley is 3-1-0-1 in their last 5 games.

GKings Best Success Is With A Defensive Style Approach

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings have been showing some positive signs lately despite their 6-4 loss to the high-powered Westshore Wolves a couple nights ago. Even in that game, the Yeti held a two goal lead late in the second period. The club has been playing good defensive hockey for most of the season and went into that game with the second best ‘goals against per game’ team but the wheels sort of fell off. They were playing a simple game, capitalized on their power play opportunities and made Westshore pay for their mistakes but got a little bit away from that in the third period. Late goals by the Wolves in both the second and third periods as well as a very fortunate bounce in the neutral zone which led to the game winning goal was the difference.

If we can put the above mentioned game aside, the simple, defensive style of game has been effective. The Glacier Kings don’t have a lot of fire power so it make a lot of sense. After 15 games, their top scorer is Zaya Morrow who has 14 points. To put that in perspective, the Peninsula Panthers have 6 players with at least 14 points and Westshore has 5. So the systems that head coach/GM Curtis Toneff has in place are geared towards safer plays and a strong defensive presence which also includes penalty killing. He talked about why his squad has had success keeping the puck out of their own net, “I think that it’s a will to defend. We’ve had a lot of conversations with our team. We’re not the flashiest bunch but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a lot of success. Like I said before, it starts with our veterans and we’ve gamed our young guys to play at the next level like most of them want. To win, you have to be able to play a very good ‘B’ game. A ‘B’ game is your play without the puck. Your stick positioning, your posture, stuff like that. Your ‘A’ game is making plays, getting points, getting offensive looks. There’s not many players that will be able to head to the next level without improving their ‘B’ game. I think they’re aware of that. If you want to win, the team’s game as a whole without the puck is key. That ‘will’ to defend has to be there to have success, especially for a team like us, maybe a little younger, maybe a little less offensively powered than other teams.” Obviously this team is built around ‘defence first’ and taking advantage of what the other teams give you offensively. Comox is the second worst team in ‘goals per game’ ahead of only the Kerry Park Islanders. The GKings scoring only averages 2.4 goals per game so your defensive play has to be spot on.

Part of being a good defensive team also requires good goaltending. For the most part, that area has been pretty good. Silas Dromarsky has only been given two starts this season but has looked very good in both. He shutout the Oceanside Generals last Saturday and is the current ‘Goaltender of the Week’ in the VIJHL. Toneff gave his thought on him, “He’s kind of like a gamer. He looks steadier and more confident in games than practices to be honest with you. I think that’s what you want from a player or goalie. I’d rather have a gamer than a guy that’s really good in practice and not so much in a game. He’s a little bigger than our other two so he creates a bit of a different look in there. I remember one puck, a player trying to score ‘short side shelf’ and it just kind of hit him. Sometimes that little bit of extra size can go a long way. He hasn’t played in a long time, like 3 weeks or a month, so kudos to him because that isn’t easy to do. You sit around day after day wondering when you’re next opportunity will come. He seized the moment.” Dromarsky has allowed just one total goal in his two games this season and has stopped 52 of 53 shots.

So Saturday’s game against Saanich will be interesting. You have a team like the Glacier Kings who have trouble scoring playing the Predators who give up a ton of goals. They have given up the second most goals of any team in the league so we’ll have to see if Comox Valley’s offence can take advantage of that. With that being said, they were shutout by Saanich in their only meeting earlier this season.
