Comox Clinches Playoff Spot

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings started strong and cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Lake Cowichan Kraken on Friday. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Yeti who still have hopes of home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. It was a full 60 minute effort in what looked like a grudge match at certain times and was certainly very entertaining.

The scoring got started early in the first period as a result of a Westin Churchill faceoff win. Landen May’s shot from the point went to the side of the net where Cameron Collins centered in front to Churchill who redirected it into the open net to make it 1-0.

The Glacier Kings would score again late in the opening frame because of a faceoff win. This time it was Gavin Munro getting it back to Haden Parker who slid it over to Gavin Mowat. His shot from the blue line was defected beautifully by Zaya Morro to make it 2-0.

That’s how the period ended. Shots were 16-5 in favor of Comox Valley.

Early in the second period, Haden Parker got a lucky bounce as he shot the puck off the glass from center ice but it hit a stanchion in the glass while goaltender Evgeni Tkachenko was going behind his goal to stop it and the puck redirected straight into the net. Unfortunately the cameraman still had the camera pointed at the Kraken bench showing an injured player while the goal happened. This is the best photo available afterwards.

The Glacier Kings kept the pressure on and eventually score again. Morro led a 3 on 2 break over the blue line and made a smart move passing it back to the trailer Evan Marko. His shot was stopped by Tkachenko but the rebound went right to Cohen Kallin who backhanded it through two sets of legs into the open cage.

Comox would make it 5-0 just 2:37 later on a scramble in front of the Lake Cowichan net. The puck eventually went off a skate right to Collins. He made a terrific turnaround pass through the slot, through skates and right to Easton Sangris who buried it past the netminder.

Late in the middle frame, GKings goalie Ander Reyes lost his bid for a shutout in his first game with his new club. Comox couldn’t get the puck out of their own zone. Toby Johnson made them pay as he passed cross-ice to Blaine Wilson who one-timed it into the net with just 52 seconds left on the clock. The 2nd period ended 5-1. The shots were 15-8 for the home side.

There wasn’t any scoring in the very physical 3rd period. Most of the hits were clean. A very close call for a goal took place early in the final stanza on a wrap-around attempt. Tkachenko lost his stick in his net and was caught on the wrong side when Rolan Amin cut around to the other side of the goal and it somehow didn’t go in. You can see the puck go along the goal line if you look closely.

With about 5 minutes left, Gavin Mowat and Toby Johnson decided to drop the gloves. It was a good bout and I’ll give the edge to Johnson.

The final score was 5-1. Comox Valley once again had a decisive edge in shots in that period 19-6.

The win improves the Yeti’s record to 21-15-5-1 for 48 points, still 3 ahead of Campbell River who also won on Friday. The Kraken drop to 12-26-1-1 for 26 points. They have been eliminated from playoff contention. Next up for Comox is a road game in Port Alberni on Wednesday while Lake Cowichan plays tonight in Kerry Park.

Other Observations:

  • By the time the game was 93 seconds old, the Glacier Kings already had a goal and hit a cross bar. They ended the period with 2 hit goal posts and 2 crossbars.
  • It was nice to see Westin Churchill’s goal in the 1st period. He has been snake-bitten. That was his first point in 9 games and first goal in 11.
  • GKings are 9-2-3-0 (21 points) in their last 14 games.
  • Comox Valley’s PP with 1:18 left in the 1st looked good. The puck never left the offensive zone but they couldn’t score before the intermission whistle.
  • Lake Cowichan’s Toby Johnson now has points in 7 of his last 10 games. He leads his club in assists and points.
  • If you’re a fan of fighting, you would have loved the bout between Nicolas Kalinocka and Landen May. They started chucking hard punches with a lot landing on both sides. The part I loved about it was that they shook hands after and then tapped each other on the helmet after it was over. I’ll be honest, I have never seen a handshake after a fight.

  • Landen May’s fight upped his his penalty minute total to 142. That’s the 4th most in the VIJHL.
  • Comox Valley is now a perfect 14-0-0-0 when they lead after the 1st period.
  • Cameron Collins now has 1G, 3A in his last 3 games.
  • Haden Parker had 1 goal in his first 37 games. Since then he has scored 3 times in his last 4 contests.
  • A fan came very close to winning the prize during the 1st intermission. He shot the puck from center ice and missed the net but Gavin Mowat redirected it with his stick and it came so close to going in.
  • The online scoring shows Lake Cowichan’s goal at 0:02 into the second period. No the Kraken didn’t set a VIJHL record with fastest goal to start a period. The time should read 19:02.
  • This is the 5th time Comox has had at least 50 shots. They are 4-0-0-1 in those games.
  • The GKings are just 3 points behind 2nd place Nanaimo in the North. Those 2 squads square off against each other in a week from Monday. Don’t count the Yeti out of a 2nd place finish quite yet.

Glacier Kings-Gens Preview

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings are back at it tonight as they travel to Parksville for a game against the Oceanside Generals. The Gens dropped into a tie for first place in the North Division after their 2-0 loss in Campbell River last night. That combined with Nanaimo’s victory over Lake Cowichan dropped Oceanside out of sole possession of the top spot. As for the Glacier Kings, they dropped out of sole possession of third and into a tie for third after the Storm win. The Generals are 25-12-1-0 while Comox is 18-15-4-1. The Gens come into tonight losing 3 of their last 4 games being outscored 18-10. The GKings have lost 2 of their last 3 but are still 6-2-2-0 in their last 10.

It looks like it’s going to be a good race for the number one and the number 3 seeds in the North going down the stretch. A win by the Generals tonight will clinch a playoff spot. The Glacier Kings on the other hand need just a point to regain sole possession of third place. In case you were wondering, the Yeti’s magic number to clinch a post-season berth is 6 (any combination of Comox wins and Port Alberni losses).

As for tonight, expect Oceanside to come out of the gates quickly. They have been good all year and aren’t happy with their results lately. Play by play broadcaster for the Generals and the Port Alberni Bulldogs of the BCHL Kyle Ireland talked about the game, “Gens will be looking for a fast start. They got shutout for the 4th time this season last night in Campbell River. Lane Maarhuis gave the Gens fits in an 8-2 loss to Victoria on January 11th so it will be interesting to see if he gets the start for the GKings.” Of course, Maarhuis started his first game for Comox on Thursday and was outstanding in a 2-0 loss in Victoria.

There aren’t a lot of players on either side to talk about regarding current streaks. That’s because both sides are coming off games where they were shutout. Neither club has an individual that is tearing up the league this season. Oceanside is led by Braeyen Newans (13G, 21A, 34Pts.) while Comox Valley’s leading scorer is Leon Mikhalchuk (17G, 18A, 35Pts.). Ireland did make a note of one key player that won’t be in the line up, “Gens will be without Kaiden Day for a second straight day due to a suspension, he’s a big part of the offence.” Day has tallied 26 points in 26 games this season. He had 10 assists in his last 10 games before the suspension.

A couple of players that will hopefully get back on the scoresheet tonight are Zaya Morro and Westin Churchill. They are 2nd and 3rd respectively on the active roster in scoring but have a combined 0 points in each of their last 5 games. Goaltending doesn’t seem like an issue as all 3 tenders have been good. Kyle says there’s a couple guys to watch tonight, “Braylon Becker has goals in 2 of his last 3 games for the Gens and will look to stay hot for the Gens. 5 points over his last 3 games and I look for power forward Leon Mikhalchuk to have another big game against the Gens, he has 8 points this season in games against the Gens… 2 very well coached teams, season series has been back and forth, very physical series. I expect the same tonight.” This is the 6th and final regular season for these two foes. Comox is 2-2-1-0 in the head-to-head battle so far. The last time they met was on January 4th when Oceanside won 4-3 in overtime.

It’s “Country Night” at the Howie Meeker Arena tonight. That’s my kind of night! My favorite would be a “Jimmy Buffett” night. I am appreciative of Dave Dueck playing a couple of Jimmy’s songs at the Yeti’s home games. Kyle Ireland will be broadcasting the Alberni Valley Bulldogs home game tonight so Buccaneers play by play broadcaster Larenzo Jensen will be the man in the booth for this evening’s contest. It will broadcast on both FloHockey and 88.5 The Beach. Puck drop is 7:00 PM. I will post Comox Valley’s line up as soon as I get it.

Glacier Kings Tidbits

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings are on a two week break, at least the ones that didn’t play in the VIJHL all-star and Top Prospects games. This was a weird part of the schedule but I’ll get into that later. Things are back to normal now and the team is getting ready for its tilt against the Victoria Cougars tomorrow.

The team has been playing well lately and are working hard to try and keep that going. Head coach/GM Curtis Toneff has been looking at ways of keeping his club focused. It hasn’t worked out as well as he had hoped because of logistical problems. The coach talked about practices, “Last week we went back to skills and small area games. I thought it was a good opportunity to do that with the time off we have. We took a few days off at the all-star break. Our players got home from the all-star break late so they had to miss practice again because of cancelled flights. So now we have 2 practices leading up to the Victoria game Thursday which is a little bit less than you’d like but it’s a good opportunity for us to get back to our system play and game play and get our intensity up for the Cougars.” Glacier King players that were involved in the all-star game were Cameron Collins, Zaya Morro and Leon Mikhalchuk. The only player of the three to record a stat in the game was Mikhalchuk who got a 5-minute major for fighting against Jacob Bernardo of the Victoria Cougars late in the first period. Collins also played in the Top Prospects game and scored a goal. Westin Churchill collected 2 assists and Anthony Ganoung stopped 12 of 15 shots in his 30 minutes of action.

I was looking at some league stats yesterday and when I dug into special teams, it was so easy to see how important that part of the game is in this league. Did you know the top 4 teams in the league hold the top 4 power play percentages. And to prove the point even more, the top 3 teams in the VIJHL hold down the top 3 penalty killing percentages. Special teams are a huge part of the game and can quite often mean the difference between winning and losing. Comox is 7th on the PP and 6th when killing penalties. I asked the coach about this topic. He said, “When it comes to the power play, most teams have a number one unit and a number two unit. Our power play looks like it’s most successful when we do a little bit less by taking what’s given to us. We move the puck quick, we get inside the interior of the ice and get to the net a little bit. We’ve had some success on the power play as of late. The PK, we’ve been solid. There’s been some nights I think where we’ve given up 3 or 4 where its cost our percentage a little bit. Two or three of those games were by far out of reach or were put out of reach anyway. I agree that special teams are important but sometimes you have to look past that first and second layer and evaluate it closer. I think that at the end of the day we have the potential of having two great power play units and have the potential to be a top 2 or top 3 team on the PK as long as we can execute coming down the stretch and into the playoffs. I believe we have the tools to do so.” Newly acquired forward Easton Sangris should help out. In fact, he scored a PP goal in just his second game with the team on January 4th. Leon Mikhalchuk leads the squad with 6 goals with the man advantage which also places him in a tie for 6th place overall in that category.

Earlier I had mentioned that this was a weird part of the schedule. I say that because the Yeti had played 6 games in 12 days (Dec. 10-21). Since then, they play just 4 times in 31 days. That’s because after the Christmas break they only played 2 weekends before having another break in their schedule. It’s also in the midst of a 4-game road stretch. It’s really too bad because they have been playing well and racking up points. To be fair, part of the extended time off is in part due to the All-Star and Top Prospect games. The GKings have gone from 12-13-2-1 on December 10th to 18-14-4-1 right now. One has to hope that all this time off hasn’t hurt their momentum. The Glacier Kings bench boss says it’s not an ideal situation, “To be honest, it’s been quite annoying, we had a great Christmas break, we had played a lot of hockey before and to come and play 4 games and then head into another break is tough. It’s been positive in the sense of figuring out some of the logistics of some guys, having them settle in and as far as practicing and getting some chemistry built because we have made some moves of late. It’s a little annoying but after the first or second period Thursday night, it won’t matter anymore. Hopefully the rest restores itself. We have no excuses now.” Another weird part of the schedule is that the Cougars and Glacier Kings have only played once through the first 37 games and now play 3 times in 3 weeks. The first game didn’t go so well, hopefully this one will be different.
