Glacier Kings Win In Overtime

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings got a much needed win on Saturday night as they downed the Oceanside Generals 3-2 in overtime. It was a fun game to watch with a lot of chances and great goaltending. The loss snaps the Glacier Kings two game losing streak and as well, the Gens winning streak ends at two. Oceanside actually came back from a 2-0 deficit midway through the second period but was never able to take the lead.

The Glacier Kings got the scoring started when Leon Mikhalchuk carried the puck over the offensive blue line on an oddman rush. He centered it into the slot where Tegan Clayton had his shot blocked but Winston Churchill got to the loose puck first and fired it past Andreas Bylerius to make it 1-0.

Silas Dromarsky made a nice save on Rykan Lay who was sent in on a breakaway late in the opening period and then another exciting play took place as time was winding down. Jacob Bate came in on a breakaway, went forehand-backhand and beat Dromarsky as the buzzer sounded. It was originally called a good goal by the referee but then after all 4 officials huddled they waived it off which was a good call. You can see the green light come on just before Bate backhands it.

 

The period ended 1-0 for the home side. Shots were 7-2 for the home team.

In the second period, Comox extended their lead to 2-0. Shortly after after Dromarsky robbed Levi Green, Leon Mikhalchuk got the puck in the Oceanside corner and passed puck to the circle to Tegan Clayton and his shot dribbled past Bylerius.

The Generals didn’t fold the tent however. Their captain Levi Green blocked a shot and Oceanside came the other way on a 2 on 1 which was executed perfectly. Ryken Lay slid the puck over to Kaiden Day who made no mistake putting it into the open net.

The middle stanza concluded with a 2-1 lead for the Yeti. The shots were 9-8 in favor of the Glacier Kings.

Early in the third, Lincoln Bueckert got possession of the puck along the goal line in the GKings end and slid it across the ice to a wide open Jacob Bate to tie the game at two.

Comox Valley took a penalty halfway through the period and Maxim Lefebvre saved a goal by hitting the stick of Jacob Leamy who had a sure goal after a puck deflected straight to him. The Generals dominated the last part of the period but couldn’t beat Dromarsky who was outstanding. The contest needed overtime. Shots were 12-6 for the Gens.

The winning goal came early in the extra period. Haden Parker left the puck at the top of his own circle for Cameron Collins and he did the rest. The 18 year old Comox native went end to end splitting between two defenders inside the offensive blue line and beat Bylerius up high with a backhand shot to make the final 3-2.

The win improves Comox Valley’s record to 8-9-2-1 for 19 points as they remain tied for 4th place with Port Alberni who also won. Their next game is Wednesday in Saanich. The point that Oceanside gained in the loss moves their line to 11-8-1-0 which actually puts them into a tie for first place with Nanaimo in the North. The Generals are off until next Saturday when they host the Bucs.

Other Observations:

  • The win was the Glacier Kings first in extra time this season. In their previous 3 games that went past the 3rd period they were 0-0-2-1.
  • Cameron Collins OT winner extended his points streak to 4 games (2G, 2A).
  • Kaiden Day now has points in 5 of his last 6 games (2G, 5A).
  • The Yeti haven’t scored a PP goal in 4 straight games.
  • Silas Dromarsky was really good and most likely earned himself another start in the very near future.
  • GKings are now a perfect 7-0-0-0 when leading after the 1st and 7-1-0-0 when leading after 40 minutes.
  • There was a penalty in the 2nd period you don’t see often as Zaya Morro tried playing the puck with a broken stick (no blade) and went off for 2 minutes for “Ineligible Player.”
  • Comox is back to .500 at home (3-3-1-1)
  • Leon Mikhalchuk has points in 8 of his last 9 games (5G, 5A).
  • The 2 shots the Glacier Kings gave up in the 1st period is fewest they’ve allowed in a period all season.
  • Comox Valley did their annual Remembrance Day ceremony. Well done by the organization and thank you to all our Veterans and active duty members. You are the real heroes. God bless you!

Comox Wins Again

The red-hot Comox Valley Glacier Kings were down early but came back and handed the Lake Cowichan Kraken a 6-2 loss on Friday. The win is the 4th in the Glacier Kings last 5 contests and they also have points in 5 of their last 6. It was a good 60 minute effort for the road side who moved up into sole possession of 4th place in the North Division.

The scoring started early but it would be the Kraken who would get on the board first. Iaroslav Morozov stole the puck on a sloppy clearing attempt by the Glacier Kings at their blue line. Morozov skated down the right side, cut towards the net and beat Anthony Ganoung from a bad angle in close.

The game stayed 1-0 until the later stages of the opening period. Logan Walz shot the puck around his own net but a great job by defenceman Landen May to pinch and get to it first. Despite being double-teamed, he managed to get the puck to the the top of the circle to Leon Mikhalchuk who walked right to the faceoff dot and fired a shot past goaltender Evgeni Tkachenko.

Then just 1:11 later Comox would take their first lead of the game. Maxim Lefebvre banked a pass back to the point to Kyle Mayenburg, his shot was stopped by Tkachenko but Zaya Morro was on the doorstep to tap it in. Ethan Gobel got credit for the assist instead of Mayenburg however. And they weren’t done there. With just 16 seconds left in the period, the Glacier Kings would get a 2 on 1 with Cameron Collins sliding it over to Landon Morris who made no mistake to make it 3-1.

That’s how the period would end. Shots were 11-10 for the Kraken.

Just like in the first period, the Kraken would score first in the second stanza. Toby Johnson carried the puck over the blue line and took a shot from the slot that was stopped by Ganoung’s pad but was poked in by Kieran Prichett and it was suddenly 3-2. Unfortunately for Lake Cowichan, that would be the last time that they score. Late in the second frame, Lefebvre gave a beautiful pass in front of the net to Morris to make it 4-2.

The road team made it 5-2 with 1:26 left and it was on another 2 on 1. Cameron Collins fed it to Ethan Gobel who buried it. Somehow Collins never got an assist on the play. The middle frame ended with shots 12-11 for the Kraken.

There was just one goal in the third period. That happened early when Cohen Kallin stole a bad pass inside his own line while shorthanded and had a breakaway the whole way down the ice and beat Tkachenko to make the final 6-2.

Shots were 12 apiece. The Glacier Kings were outshot for the game but had the better chances throughout with multiple odd man rushes.

The win improves the Yeti’s record to 7-7-2-1 and play at home to Peninsula on Saturday. Both of those teams are just 2 points out of first place in their respective divisions. The Kraken drop to 5-10-0-0 as they went winless in October. They host Campbell River on Sunday.

  • The 6 goals were the most Comox Valley has scored this season.
  • The loss extended Lake Cowichan’s losing streak to 9 games.
  • Oddly enough, the Glacier Kings did not have a PP in the game. That breaks their streak of at least 1 PP goal in 3 straight matches.
  • Talk about scoring in bunches. Comox scored 3 goals in a 2:41 span late in the 1st period, then scored 2 goals in 51 seconds late in the second.
  • Leon Mikhalchuk has now scored a goal in 5 of his last 6 games.
  • The Kraken’s PP goal came on a 5 minute penalty during the second period.
  • Despite not scoring a PP goal, Comox did convert on a short-handed goal and a 4 on 4 marker.
  • Kieran Prichett’s goal was his first point in 8 games. He put up 4 points (2G, 2A) in his season opener.
  • The Yeti are now a perfect 6-0-0-0 when leading after the first period.
  • The second period mandatory timeout never took place until there was 3:19 left on the clock.
  • Etan Gobel has 2G, 5A in his last 4 games.
  • The GKings are at .500 for the first time this season.
  • And finally, don’t forget to turn your clocks back tonight before you go to bed.

Storm Down Glacier Kings Again

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings lost for the fifth time in six games this season as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Campbell River Storm. This is the second time this season that the Yeti have lost to the Storm. The first time was back on September 13th which ended in a 3-2 overtime score at the Sports Centre. The loss drops Comox Valley’s record to 1-4-1 on the season while Campbell River improves to 3-4-0.

It was a very uninspiring first period for Comox who had very few chances as the play on both sides would be sloppy. There were no goals and the Storm outshot the Yeti 16-7.

The GKings would open the scoring in the second period on the power play. Cameron Collins skated down the left side and gave a drop pass to Maxim Lefebvre who blasted a shot from the top of the circle but goaltender Luc Gravel made a nice pad save. Unfortunately for Gravel, the rebound came right back to Lefebvre who snuck a quick backhand feed to Collins at the side of the net where it would be an easy tap in. Immediately after the mandatory timeout midway through the frame, the Storm won the faceoff in their own zone and would score without the Yeti ever touching the puck. Noah Spencer skated behind the net, came out the other side and took a quick turn-around shot from a bad angle that beat Timothee Fengos short side to knot things at one. Just over 3 minutes later, the Storm would score another goal after a faceoff win. It took about 10 seconds when Ryder Tanner scored from a terrible angle at the side boards and it was 2-1. In the dying seconds of the middle stanza, Comox would turn the puck over in the center ice area and Holden Smith took over carrying it in over the blue line, then skated behind the net and passed back to the top of the right circle where Lucas Beaudoin wristed it past Fengos and it was 3-1 after 2 periods. Shots on goal after at that point were 32-19 for the home side.

As they’ve done for the most part this season, the Glacier Kings played better in the third period but it was the Storm that would score a 4th consecutive goal. On the 4 on 4 situation, Nicholas Condon broke in over the blue line, toe-dragged around Leon Mikhalchuk and beat Fengos blocker side. The GKings would make the score more respectable late when Aryx Siefker hammered Maxim Lefebvre into the boards to give Comox a power play. Kyle Mayenburg took a pass from Declan Johannesen and beat Gravel through the legs. That’s how the game ended. Shots were 17-9 in favor of the road team in that period.

Just as a side note: There was a scrum in front of the Comox Valley net about 5 minutes into the 3rd period after Fengos made a save. I’ve replayed it about 15 times to try and figure out what happened. It looked like Haden Parker crossed checked a Storm player down to the ice which I thought would be the extra penalty. As 8 players started wrestling, it appeared that Landen May sucker punched Campbell River’s Lucas Beaudoin in the face which made me think an extra penalty again. Now all 10 players were in the melee and a fight broke out between May and Noah Spencer. Lots of punches were thrown. May threw his helmet off on the way to the penalty box and Spencer raised his arms up trying to get the fans going. Somehow, the referees decided 2 minutes for everyone except the Storm’s Jack Smith who got an extra 2 minutes and it would be the Glacier Kings with a power play. I’m still scratching my head on that one.

Campbell River now has a day before they go back into action Sunday when they will be at home against Lake Cowichan for an afternoon affair. Comox is right back at it tonight when they host the Nanaimo Buccaneers. The Bucs won the season opener between these two clubs by a score of 4-2. Game time is 6:30pm at the Sports Centre.

Other Observations

  • Comox has now scored a PP goal in 3 consecutive games. They have a total of 6 in those 3 contests.
  • After the Glacier Kings made it 1-0 and maybe a chance to gain some momentum, they took a penalty just 32 seconds later. (I admit it was a very weak interference call by the referee.)
  • Campbell River’s 3rd goal was tough to swallow as they scored with just 1 second left in the 2nd period because of a defensive breakdown.
  • Once again, the Storm won the majority of the faceoffs
  • At one point in the 3rd period, there were 10 players in the penalty box (5 from each side).
  • Cameron Collins now has at least a point in all 3 games that he’s played in (1G, 3A)
  • Storm forward Noah Spencer was an assist shy of a Gordie Howe hat trick. He was just missing the assist. (He wasn’t credited with a fight on the game sheet but it was definitely a scrap with lots of punches.)
  • After recording at least a point in each of his first 4 games, Dylan Toth has been held pointless in 2 straight.
  • The 41 shots the Yeti gave up was the most all season. Their previous high was 37, also against the Storm.
  • Comox continues to struggle in 1st period. They’ve scored just 3 goals in 6 games in the first period.
  • A nice crowd of 711 fans were on hand. That’s Campbell River’s second highest total of the year. They had 818 in their home opener against Oceanside.
  • The Storm are 2-0-0 against Comox and 1-4-0 against the rest of the league.
