Glacier Kings – Kraken Preview

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings hit the road tonight as they will travel to Lake Cowichan in one of three Halloween games on tap in the VIJHL. The Glacier Kings have been playing well lately winning 3 of their last 4 games and have points in 4 of their last 5. Their opponents on the other hand haven’t been having a lot of luck lately. After a promising start where they won 5 of their first 6 games, the Kraken have now lost 8 consecutive matches and have sunk to the basement in the North Division. They’ve been outscored 29-12 in those 8 games which averages out to only scoring 1.5 goals per game during that stretch. Comox currently sits tied for 4th place in the North Division with a 6-7-1-2 record. A win would move them ahead of Port Alberni into sole possession of 4th and also place them at .500 for the first time this season. Lake Cowichan sports a 5-9-0-0 line which is 5 points behind the Glacier Kings and the Bombers.

I’m not really expecting a high scoring game. Both teams play a pretty good defensive game and each also have trouble scoring. As an insight, there are a total of 20 players that have scored at least 7 goals already this season. None are from either of these teams. Another example is the Yeti are the second lowest scoring team in the league ahead of only Kerry Park. Lake Cowichan has the 3rd lowest goals per game. Another stat shows the Glacier Kings leading scorer (Zaya Morro) is tied for 22nd place in the VIJHL. The Kraken’s leading point-getter (Kadin Bilajbegovic) is tied for 43rd. In fact, the only meeting between these two foes so far ended up in a low scoring 3-1 affair in favor of Comox back on October 17th. We might expect the same tonight.

As for special teams, here’s where they stack up:

Power Play
Comox Valley: 16.7% (8th)
Lake Cowichan: 17.3% (7th)
Penalty Kill
Comox Valley: 88.7% (1st)
Lake Cowichan: 76.4% (10th)

There’s no question that the Glacier Kings have been working on their offensive game in practice lately and have scored 8 goals in their last 2 matches so they could be turning a corner. It’s only the second time this season that they’ve scored at least 4 goals in back to back games. The most they’ve scored in a game is 5 and have done that twice (Sept. 20th @ Kerry Park & Sept. 27th @ Nanaimo). The question is, who will be able to step up tonight?

Someone who has been playing well offensively is Ethan Gobel. No, he is not the leading scorer on his club but he is the only player that averages over a point a game. He was held pointless against Saanich in his last contest but racked up 1G, 3A in his previous one against Westshore. Head coach/GM Curtis Toneff says he likes a lot of things about Gobel, “Honestly, he’s a hockey nerd through and through. He loves the game, he wants to get better every day and I think he does get better every day and I think it rubs off on his teammates. I think if he wants to, he could work in hockey when he done. He was hurt for a few games and was doing more analytics than I do. He’s kind of a fun guy to have around as coaches. I know Brad Smith is a very big fan. Just kind of a coaches dream, a center with size, plays in every situation. He’s our version of Anze Kopitar. Having guys like him give you a chance to win a lot of nights down the stretch for sure.” So far this season, Gobel has tallied 3G, 11A 14Pts in 11 games.

The Kraken are a dangerous team to play right now. They are definitely overdue for a victory plus 4 of their 5 wins have come at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena. It is a tough place to play as noted by their 4-4 record there. With that being said, it is a very winnable game for the GKings as long as they don’t make too many silly mistakes. Toneff says he know this game is key in the standings and his squad can’t take the Kraken for granted, “They’re all important, it’s going to be tight for awhile. It’s going to be a desperate team that we’re facing. You look at the shot clock when Lake Cowichan plays, they’re usually in charge of the shot clock. Watching them, they’re usually in charge 50% of the game. I know they have a hard hat and lunch box mentality by the looks of it so we have to be ready to go and not think that we’re going to be spotted a three goal lead like a week and a half ago.” After winning their first 4 games at home, the Kraken have lost their last 4 in front of their fans.

The other two games in the VIJHL also have North Division implications with Victoria @ Campbell River and Oceanside @ Peninsula. If all goes well in the 3 games, Comox Valley could see themselves just 2 points out of first place in the North. It looks like Anthony Ganoung will get the start in net. The Glacier Kings line up is now posted in the “Gameday Lineups” section of this blog. Hopefully we’ll be celebrating a Blue Jays World Series Championship by the time the puck drops. Are you ready Marsha? I’ll be texting with you again tonight (it brought us good luck on Wednesday). Go Blue Jays!

Coach Happy With Team’s Play Lately

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings have definitely had their ups and downs this season but have seemed to have made adjustments and are playing much better in the past few weeks. They have had two 4-game losing streaks so far but right now are winners of 3 in their last 4 for a second time and have points in 4 of their last 5. Even though it seemed like a disastrous start by losing their first 4 games of the season, the head coach made sure his team didn’t panic. They dug themselves a hole early but have been slowly getting themselves out of it and are now back to a much more respectable 6-7-2-1 record. In fact, the club is only 3 points out of first place. The Glacier Kings have found their identity and that’s important. If a team doesn’t understand who they are, they can get lost. They know they won’t score 6 goals every game this year so they know that they need to be strong on their defensive assignments. With that being said, they have been getting a lot of shots and opportunities lately.

Comox Valley played a pretty strong game last Saturday against a Predators team who are better than their record shows. It was an important game for the Yeti after the disappointing loss to Westshore after holding a 2-goal lead in the second period. Head coach/GM Curtis Toneff talked about Saturday’s game against the Predators, “I thought we did a good job to bounce back from an early goal against. We were just discussing the importance of a good start and scoring that first goal and then they score a couple minutes in. Maybe that’s my fault for talking about it too much. It was good to see us get a quick one in response on the power play. And finally towards the end of the second period we got some puck luck that we were missing at home in I don’t know how many weeks, it seems like a few anyways. It was nice to go in the the third period and find a way to get 2 points at home for the first time in awhile.” The early goal against that he was referring to was when Josh Yolkowski scored just 1:23 into the first period to give Saanich the early lead. The coach knows what he’s talking about when saying they need to get off to a good start. His team is 5-0-0-0 when leading after the first period.

So it’s back to practice for the club. It is great to see the coach back on the ice again after struggling with an illness for a bit. Despite the squad playing better lately, there’s still a lot of work and improvement that needs to happen. Toneff talked about practice, “A little bit of battle, just getting back to that classic junior hockey work week. We had a battle day yesterday, a little bit more flow and skills today, we’re touching on our system play Wednesday and special teams Wednesday and Thursday. I was under the weather last week and Brad (Smith) had the reigns for the most part. It’s always good to have another voice. It was maybe a good natural break for the players from me because I can get on them a little bit. It’s been a really good two weeks we hope as we move into this next phase here.” The GKings have been practicing more this year than they did last season.

I’m looking forward to Friday’s game against Lake Cowichan as it is a chance to the Glacier Kings to distance themselves from the Kraken. And if Port Alberni beats Nanaimo on Thursday, it will be their chance to be tied for 3rd place in the North Division. Who would have thought that after the first 4 games this season?

Later this week I’ll have posts on topics like Ethan Gobel’s importance to the team, a couple of unsung heroes, if the faceoff situation is getting better, where the club needs more depth, the goalie situation (again) and a preview of Friday’s game. That’s it for now, Go Blue Jays (and Glacier Kings of course)!

Glacier Kings Announce Leadership Group

For the first few weeks of the season, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings did not have a captain and played with only one assistant captain. Before the season started head coach/GM Curtis Toneff said he was going to take his time and make sure his decision was the right decision. He wanted to see how things played out. The leaders will rise to the top in the dressing room and on the ice. It was also a chance to gauge the maturity levels of the possible candidates. The decision was made after the Campbell River game last weekend and now the club has a full compliment of “C’s” and “A’s”.

Curtis told me a month ago that in past years he would get excited in the offseason to name the players receiving letters right away. He also said that he has matured as a coach and patience to make the correct decision was paramount. I asked him yesterday about the process in making the decisions, “There was a lot of observing. Just over a week ago, Monday I think, we took a vote (the players). The votes didn’t necessarily fix the letters, I just wanted to see for myself. There wasn’t really one guy running away with one C or A. So it’s kind of interesting to take a look at it. Brad (Smith), myself and Jackson (Garrett) discussed it, even got Marsha’s (Webb) opinion as well. She’s been around and has owned the team a long time. The Webb’s have owned this team a long time for a reason. I took their opinions into consideration but at the end of the day it was my call.” First of all I want to say sorry Marsha. I know from past years that she hates when I mention her name in my blogs lol. I only do it because I love you. So who did the coach end up deciding on? Here’s what he had to say…

Kyle Mayenburg (C)
“We think he has a great presence, his effort, his attitude and to be honest, even his posture kind of speaks for itself. The kind of guy that has a firm handshake, looks at you straight in the eye, doesn’t say too much but also doesn’t say too little. He works hard everyday.”
Zaya Morro (A)
“Zaya Morrow is the kind of guy that calms us all down., maybe including myself. In sudden moments, he is a very good communicator with the refs. He plays hard every night.”
Isaac Dunsire (A)
“I challenged the team the other night to play for the logo and not themselves. Dunsire, to me, is a guy that cares more about the team than himself through and through. He very badly wants to win every night, works hard everyday and is a good person.”
Haden Parker (A)
“Haden Parker got some ‘C’ votes. It’s been really cool to watch him progress over the last year since I’ve been here. Seems like he’s really been enjoying playing the game. He’s been a bit of a rock back there (on defence) in my opinion for us. He’s got a great stick , hard to get around, he’s upped his ‘compete level’ from the end of last year.”

Just because certain players were not chosen for a letter doesn’t mean they aren’t leaders in their own right. Every player and goaltender has to hold themself accountable for their play on the ice as well as how they carry themselves off the ice including in the dressing room and in public. Toneff did say other players deserved some recognition as well, “Some other guys round out the leadership group, they might not wear an ‘A’ but Landen May, Cohen Kallin and Tegan Clayton will all be part of it as well.” The selections seem solid but that certainly doesn’t diminish anyone’s role on the team that weren’t chosen.

That’s it for this post. Stay tuned as my next post is going to include a lot of team stats as well as the coaches opinion on newly named assistant captain Zaya Morro who is off to a terrific start on a team that struggles to score goals. Have a good Wednesday.
