I don’t know about anyone else but I am excited about this weekend’s games for the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. So far, they’ve played strong teams like Nanaimo, weaker teams like Kerry Park and middle of the road teams like Campbell River, Oceanside and Saanich. All those games have one theme… the Yeti have been in every one of them until the very end. So what’s difference about this weekend? Well… so far they have played a total of 5 games combined over 3 weekends. Starting Friday, it will be 3 games in 3 days. Two games will be against undefeated teams (Peninsula 5-0, Nanaimo 4-0) and their other opponent will be their arch rival (Campbell River). This is as tough as it gets. As I said, the Glacier Kings have been very competitive so far but this will be a definite test.

Going into the weekend, Comox Valley is in pretty good shape healthwise. They already have 13 players that have played in all 5 games and they added some players a couple weeks ago who didn’t start the season but will be in there everyday. Head coach/GM Curtis Toneff talked about the situation heading into this weekend, “Tegan Clayton has a broken clavicle, he’s out for probably another couple months. Other than that, we’re pretty healthy here… knock on wood.” Of course it’s still early and the wear and tear of playing such a physical sport at this level will take its toll at some point with some of the guys. It’s a long season. For now, fingers are crossed.

As long as the coach is carrying three goaltenders, questions will continue to mount on what his position is with carrying three. So I decided to look and see what the other 10 teams in the league are doing. 9 of the other 10 teams in the VIJHL are also carrying 3 goalies. The only squad with just 2 are the Nanaimo Buccaneers. For the Bucs, former Glacier King Aaron Pichette has played two games (2-0, 1.50, .938)  and Adam Ranger has also played in two (2-0, 2.38, .919) so that tandem has done well. I asked Toneff about who was leading the way for his team, “I still think it’s early, they’re all coming from Midget to Junior. They’re all pushing each which is nice, they’re all wanting the net which is what you want to see. There’s just one or two goals a practice that they have had that you just can’t let in. If they all clean that up, it will really get interesting in there. If you look at our goals against and other stuff, goaltending hasn’t been an issue. Hopefully it’s like the rest of the team and they get better and continue to grow.” Here are the stats so far:

Anthony Ganoung, 0-2-0, 3.04, .902
Timothee Fengos, 0-1-1, 3.46, .901
You have to wonder if all 3 goalies will get starts this weekend considering the 3 games in 3 days. All have played well for the most part.

We’re through 5 games now and the GKings still don’t have a captain and only one assistant captain. Obviously Haden Parker has an ‘A’ which he earned from being an assistant captain last season with the club. So, we are expecting one “C” and two more “A’s” to be named before too long. Curtis did say that he has been proactively collecting information to make sure he makes the right decision, “I did put it to a vote earlier this week. I did that just to give myself a better gauge and to give the players a say in their thoughts. There were about 4 guys that they voted for Captain and they had 2 ‘A’ votes because Haden Parker is lettered nonetheless. That why I made the vote one C’ and two A’s. It was interesting because it didn’t really get me anywhere because the vote was so even and perhaps all over the place. It gives you a good indication that there are 5 or 6 guys that are the leadership group. But who gets what remains to be seen to be honest with you. I don’t want to jump the gun on these decisions like we talked about a few weeks ago.” It will definitely be interesting to see if the players that are given letters will be the veterans or a mixture of new blood and experienced vets.

Gameday Lineup do not get emailed out to my subscribers like the new posts do. Curtis sends it to me the day of the game and I try to post it right away if possible. Glacier Kings Goaltending Situation

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings have had a tough start with their offense this year and have had too many turnovers in the defensive end. One area that they haven’t struggled in is goaltending. As most people are aware, last year’s standout, Aaron Pichette was moved to Nanaimo to complete a deal with the Buccaneers. Aaron put up terrific stats for Comox last year posting a 3.24 GAA and a .914 save percentage. He has actually started 2 out of the first 3 games for Nanaimo this season. In his 2 starts, he allowed just 2 goals against the Glacier Kings and 1 goal against Port Alberni, both were victories. It’s very early but a 1.50 GAA and a .939 save percentage isn’t too bad.

The GKings are carrying 3 goaltenders right now. Timothee Fengos has started in 2 of the 3 games so far. Fengos is a 17 year old out of Pierrefonds, Quebec. He has looked good in both games, made some huge saves in the last game in particular against Campbell River but would probably like to have that OT goal back. Anthony Ganoung started in Saanich and played well enough to be the 3rd ‘Star of the Game’. Comox Valley is carrying a third goaltender who has not seen any action yet. That’s 17 year old Silas Dromarsky out of Alberta. He saw action in the pre-season but hasn’t appeared in a regular season contest yet.

With the Glacier Kings carrying two 17 year old goalies and one 18 year old, I asked head coach & GM Curtis Toneff, what the situation looks like for his netminders. Toneff replied, “I think we’re in a position where Luca Vanzo could very well come back in October. One of our other goalies Anthony Ganoung is knocking on the door and challenging the other two (Fengos & Dromarsky) and has done a great job doing that. He’s making the other guys better everyday.” It will be interesting to see who he goes with tomorrow night.

Everyone knows a competition is a very healthy way out of getting the very best out of each individual. The question is, who’s the number one goalie. The bench boss said, “If someone gets hot, they might play back to back. But there’s always a good possibility that the guy in the crease is rested and not overworked. I think it’s a great combination. It’s too early to tell who’s running away with it.” Considering we’re only 3 games into the season, there’s still lots of time for someone to emerge. And if they both play well, that’s a bonus with 2 strong rested backstops.

We’re all wishing the best for Luca Vanzo first and foremost and also hope he can make it back to be a part of the equation in Comox. That would really make the competition fierce in the land of the Yeti. On a team that finished under .500 last year, Vanzo had a very respectable 6-6 record, 3.49 GAA and .903 save percentage.

Now if only the offence can give these guys some support. They’ve scored just 4 goals in 3 games to start the season. The Glacier Kings play tomorrow evening at home to Oceanside. Hope to see a big crowd at the CVSC. That’s it for today, have a great Thursday.

Glacier Kings Drop Opener

The Nanaimo Buccaneers got their 2025/26 season off to a good start as they downed the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 4-2 on Saturday. The game was scoreless over halfway through the second period when Madden Cruickshank opened the the scoring for Nanaimo on the power play. It started with Jack Barrett feeding Ethan Nordli on a cross-ice pass at the blue line. Nordli quickly gave it to Cruickshank at the face dot who ripped a wrist shot up high, short side to make it 1-0. The Glacier Kings would counter just 2:48 later when Joel Schmidt sent a rink wide pass through the neutral zone to Cohen Kallin who carried the puck over the blue line and took a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Goaltender Aaron Pichette made a stick save but the puck would ricochet up in the air and Maxim Lefebvre knocked it out of the air and into the net. The goal was credited to Kallin unassisted but it was Lefebvre at the right side of the net who scored. The Bucs would then score 3 consecutive times, two late in the second and again in the third before Comox would answer. Nanaimo dominated a lot of the second period outshooting the Glacier Kings 16-6. With the score 4-1 midway through the third period, and the Glacier Kings on a power play, Lucas Dionne checked Kingston Gowans up high and took a roughing penalty to give the Yeti a 5 on 3 for 1:10. Head coach Curtis Toneff took the opportunity to take a timeout and it paid off.  A beautiful Tic-Tac-Toe play would pull the GKings within 2. From the right hash, Westin Churchill passed the puck back to the point to Evan Marko who quickly got it to the side of the net to Isaac Dunsire. The Courtenay native would one-time a cross-crease pass to Zaya Moro who buried it into the open net. Marko should have been credited with a second assist but wasn’t on the official game sheet. Comox Valley would have more chances, including a couple more power play opportunities but Pichette closed the door. All in all, it was a good third frame for the Glacier Kings but they fell short.

The game was physical at times, some clean, some not so clean. Comox was 1 for 7 on the PP while Nanaimo went 2 for 4. Timothee Fengos stopped stopped 30 of pucks sent his way while Aaron Pichette blocked 21 of 23.

The Glacier Kings next action is Friday in Saanich. The Predators are coming off a 7-3 victory over the Kerry Park Islanders on Friday. Travis Swanson had a hat trick in that one. He also potted a couple of goals in pre-season. As for the Bucs, they travel to Westshore on Wednesday. The Wolves lost 7-2 to Peninsula on Friday.

Other Observations

  • This is the 3rd year in a row that the Glacier Kings have lost their season opener. Last time they won their first game was 2022-23 when they beat the Westshore Wolves 5-2 at the Q Centre.
  • The first period of last night’s game wasn’t shown on FloHockey due to technical problems.
  • Going back to pre-season action, Zaya Morro has scored in 3 straight games.
  • It was nice to see Larenzo Jensen back behind the microphone. Larenzo has also helped out with a lot of Nanaimo Clippers broadcasts in the past as well.
  • It only took the Glacier Kings 17 seconds to score on their 5 on 3.
  • The announced crowd at the NIC on Saturday was 355. That was their biggest crowd since September 6th, 2018. That was also their season opener when they beat Campbell River 3-1. The announced crowd that night was 370.
  • During the game, I was texting with Comox Valley owner Marsha Webb and former Campbell River Storm play by play broadcaster Mark Berry. One of the reasons I started a blog again was because I was missing the hockey community.
  • This was the first time since 2015 that the Glacier Kings opened their season against Nanaimo. They have started against Campbell River the majority of the times before this. In case you’re wondering, the Buccaneers won that game 4-3 in OT.
