Bad Start Costs Comox

After all the preaching head coach/GM Curtis Toneff gave to his players about getting into “Game Mode” from the opening faceoff… how did they start? Two penalties in the first 4:23 and the Saanich Predators took advantage scoring just 15 seconds into their second PP. Before the game was 5 minutes old, Saanich was up 1-0. Elijah Kim took a shot from the right faceoff dot. Goaltender Anthony Ganoung made a pad save but left a huge rebound that Travis Swanson buried into the open net. That would be the only goal of the first period.

There was just one goal in the second period and guess who? It would be Travis Swanson for a second time. Once again, his linemate Elijah Kim set him up. This time it was a feed from the right corner right into the crease. Comox Valley played a much better period but couldn’t beat goalie George Jantz.

The Yeti played another good third period but the only goal would be an empty-netter with 12 seconds left by Von Parsons. Final shots on goal were 47-33 in favor of the Glacier Kings. Anthony Ganoung played his VIJHL game and was impressive making 30 saves. Broadcaster Clay Cochrane gave him 3rd Star of the Game but the game sheet didn’t.

Next up are the Campbell River Storm tonight in the Glacier Kings home opener. Puck drop is at 6:30.

Other Observations

  • Scoring continues to be an issue for Comox. After being the second lowest scoring team in the league last season, they have scored just twice in their first 2 games this year.
  • Elijah Kim’s 3 assists gives him 8 points which leads the VIJHL.
  • Travis Swanson’s 2 goals gives him 5 which is second best in the league behind Victoria’s Carson Harris who has 6.
  • Going back to last regular season, the GKings have lost 4 straight road games.
  • How did all 3 stars go to Saanich last night? The 3 Stars has become a joke. Honestly, the league should go back to the “Star of the Game” for each team. Same happened in Nanaimo.
  • Tonight will be the third year in a row that the Glacier Kings home opener will be against Campbell River. The last 2 didn’t go so well.
  • There was an announced crowd of just 87 people last night. Too bad considering the Preds have 2 of the most exciting players in the league.
  • Anthony Ganoung is tied for second in the VIJHL with a .938 save percentage.

That’s it for this post. Hope you can make it to the game tonight.
